Ligonier Ministries and LifeWay Research released an update of their survey of Americans and their understanding of theology. It is an eye opener. Not that it is surprising that Americans would have little knowledge of theology. It is as passé as philosophy, or objective thinking general, but the responses of self-identified Evangelicals. Actually, in this revision of last year's study, they are not self-identified, but identified more accurately by their stated beliefs. But if this is what Evangelicals belief, the Church is in trouble.
56% of Evangelicals believe that the Holy Spirit isn't a person, even though 97% claim to be Trinitarian. 74% of Evangelicals believe that one must contribute to their salvation. So much for Sola Gratia. 48% of Evangelicals believe that God accepts the worship of non-Christians, such as Muslims and Jews.
It is clear that this second study is no better than the first by the conflicting responses, but I still find it disturbing that Evangelicals are so confused and would agree to such statements as, “God knows everything that occurs in the world but does not determine all that happens.”
